Parent Involvement and Tips for Distance Learning

Hello everyone, my name is Michael Cushine, and I am speaking on behalf of the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District.  We are excited to welcome our students back to school with instruction beginning on August 24 with a distance learning model.  The purpose of this video is to outline tips for parental involvement as we navigate these unprecedented times.  Maintaining a morning routine is a key component to your student’s success.  Have your child set an alarm, get dressed, and eat breakfast as if they were going to traditional school.  This routine will ensure some normalcy and get students into a learning mindset.  Students will achieve their best work in a quiet, comfortable and dedicated space that is devoted to learning.  Ideally, this will be a separate space from where they normally play games or watch television.  Sometimes that may mean supporting a child as they log in and vacillating between other learners in the home.  Headphones will be helpful as distance learning will include synchronous instruction where student, peers and teacher interact in real time via video conferencing.  The ability to wear headphones will help students limit distractions.  Make sure children take plenty of breaks from their computer in order to get time away from the screen.  Encourage them to get up, stretch, get fresh air and have a snack.  Distance learning presents challenges, especially for working parents who have little employment flexibility.  Enlist the help of your own network of family, friends, neighbors or older children to assist with distance learning.  Educators want your student to be successful.  If you are concerned with your student’s success reach out to the teacher or school to seek assistance, modifications tips and guidance.  We are in this together.  Distance Learning will never replace the magic that happens in physical classrooms and there will be bumps along the road.  Acknowledge this is not an ideal situation and allow yourself, your children, and their teachers latitude and grace during these unprecedented times.  
Distance learning is not the same as homeschooling.  Parents are not expected to take the place of their child’s teacher.  Instead parents should play a support role and ensure their student is present and engaged!  As always, be their advocate and learning coach.  Support your student by  checking Canvas with your student daily; modeling behaviors, characteristics needed for online learning success; connecting learning to personal experiences; engaging in creativity together.  Encourage your child to participate in their online classrooms.  Although it may feel awkward at first, being engaged and involved will help distance learning feel closer to “normal.”  Encourage students to keep in touch with friends, family and mentors.
