School Attendance Review Board (SARB)
The goal of the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) is to develop relationships with students and families in order to understand the challenges that students face in attending school. We hope to improve graduation rates and reduce dropout rates for students with continuous attendance challenges. Students are referred to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) after all the resources available to a school’s Student Attendance Review Team (SART) have been exhausted.
The review board includes site representatives, community representatives, law enforcement, members of the probation department, District staff, community-based organizations, and the SARB facilitator. As a team, they represent and utilize resources within the community in order to meet the unique needs of students and families who struggle to attend school regularly.
What does the sarb do?
- Promote a culture and practice of positive attendance in schools
- Develop and implement intervention strategies in order to reduce chronic absenteeism
- Provide support to habitually-truant students and families through the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) process
- Conduct School Attendance Review Board (SARB) hearings and reviews that are culturally-sensitive to student and family conditions
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT DURING SARB?
We will work together with students and families to help them understand and address key attendance challenges that students face, both in and out of school, as well as promote the benefits of attending school.
The goal of SARB meetings is to connect students and families to resources, local agencies, and/or community-based service providers (e.g., counseling services, after-school programs, etc.)
If needed, we will refer students to various alternative education opportunities, where appropriate
