Home & Hospital Instruction

What is Home & Hospital Instruction?

Home & Hospital Instruction (HHI) offers temporary educational support for students who are unable to attend school in person for four weeks or more due to a temporary disability. This service helps students stay connected to their learning while they recover at home or in a hospital setting.

Eligibility is determined by the school district and requires a medical provider’s recommendation. If you are wondering if your child may qualify, reach out to your school nurse for guidance on how to begin the process.

Our goal is to support your child’s continued learning and help them transition smoothly back to school when they are ready.

Who Qualifies for Home & Hospital Instruction?

Limited students may qualify for HHI if they have a temporary physical, mental, or emotional condition that prevents them from attending school for four weeks or more.

To be eligible:

  • A licensed physician or psychologist must verify the condition and provide an estimated duration of absence.

  • The disability must be temporary, not a long-term or chronic condition already addressed through an IEP or 504 Plan.

  • For students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), the IEP team must determine whether HHI is appropriate and what services will be provided.

Important Notes About Home & Hospital Instruction (HHI)

  • HHI is a temporary instructional service for students who are unable to attend school due to a temporary physical, mental, or emotional disability.

  • A temporary disability is a condition a student incurs while enrolled in regular or alternative education and is expected to recover and return to their regular program without special intervention.

  • A temporary disability does not include conditions identified under Education Code Section 56026 for students with exceptional needs (those who require special education services).

  • Parents/guardians must ensure the student consistently participates in scheduled HHI instruction.

  • Students enrolled in private schools or home school programs are not eligible for HHI under Education Code 48207.

If you have questions about HHI, please contact your school nurse.
