Independent Study
Independent Study
Students in grades transitional kindergarten through eighth grade are eligible for the Independent Study Program, with the approval of the site administrator. For students with exceptional needs, the IEP/504 team must recommend participation in the program and approve placement prior to the beginning date of IS absences.
A student may be enrolled in Independent Study for 3 to 14 days (cumulative for the year). During this time, students will receive their assignments and the resources for completing the assignments from their rostered teacher and home school site.
Parents should request an Independent Study Master Agreement as soon as possible. Please submit the Independent Study Master Agreement at least five days prior to the absence date for approval.
Students and parents must both commit to participating in the Independent Study Program.

Home and Hospital (HHI)
Home & Hospital Instruction?
Home & Hospital Instruction (HHI) offers temporary educational support for students who are unable to attend school in person for four weeks or more due to a temporary disability. This service helps students stay connected to their learning while they recover at home or in a hospital setting.
Eligibility is determined by the school district and requires a medical provider's recommendation. If you are wondering if your child may qualify, reach out to your school nurse for guidance on how to begin the process.
Our goal is to support your child's continued learning and help them transition smoothly back to school when they are ready.
For more information on HHI, visit our Health, Safety and Wellness Page
Common Core
COMMON CORE STATE STANDARD PARENT GUIDES
Parent guides were prepared by the staff of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction to provide an overview of what your child will learn by the end of each grade (TK - 8th) in mathematics and English language arts/literacy. If your child is meeting the expectations outlined in these standards, he or she will be well prepared for the next grade.
Educational standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject in each grade. In California, the State Board of Education decides on the standards for all students, from kindergarten through high school.
Since 2010, 45 states have adopted the same standards for English and math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Having the same standards helps all students get the same high quality education, even if they change schools or move to a different state. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the standards to prepare students for success in college and the workplace.

Home Schooling
HOME SCHOOLING BY PARENTS
The Panama-Buena Vista Union School District does not have a home schooling program. The two options available to parents, home schooling monitored through the Kern County Superintendent's Office, or for students with medically related absences, are covered below.
For parents wishing to remove their student(s) from our District and home school, they must call Valley Oaks Charter School (661-852-6700) - located at 3401 Chester Avenue #D - by the Ice House at 34th & Chester). The program is monitored by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools (661-636-4724). The Panama-Buena Vista Union School District does not offer a home schooling option for parents within our District - parents must follow through with the KCSOS office.
Valley Oaks offers parent orientation on Mondays at 2 p.m., however, parents must call to see if an orientation is scheduled and to have their name put on the list ahead of time. Normally, early in the school year, Valley Oaks is full with a waiting list.
