Camps and Programs

This summer we will be offering two options for camp. We will offer:

• A six week thematic-based camp
• A week-to-week camp option to allow for flexibility

Registration will open on March 18 on your school's website using 6Crickets. Please watch the registration tutorial videos on your school's website before March 18. 

Before registration begins, please make sure your child’s school has the most up-to-date and accurate information for the legal guardian. The details on file will be used to grant access to registration.

Please note that the legal guardian listed with the school must be the person who completes the registration and enrolls the student in the summer program.

KEEP is an environmental education program serving over 7,000 Kern County students annually across two coastal campuses:

• KEEP Ocean at Montaña de Oro State Park
• KEEP By the Sea in Arroyo Grande.

Both sites offer immersive, hands-on science experiences aligned with California State Science Content Standards, accommodating 80–112 students per week in fully equipped outdoor school settings with cabins, dining halls, learning centers, and support facilities.

Programs are led by trained naturalists who teach curriculum, guide hikes, and run evening activities, while classroom teachers assist with student supervision and health. The KEEP Foundation supports access through scholarships and financial aid.

At KEEP By the Sea, located in an oak woodland, students live and learn in a community-centered campus featuring the Learning Center, “Nest” meeting hall, and outdoor recreation spaces. The program combines academic study with daily life experiences like family-style meals and culminating events such as the KEEP Café. Students explore coastal ecosystems through themed days including Open Coast (intertidal and beach life), Watershed Day (dunes and water systems), and Woodland Discovery (oak forest ecology), engaging in field journaling, inquiry-based investigations, and scientific analysis of ecosystems, adaptations, and ecological relationships.

KEEP Ocean, set within Montaña de Oro State Park, provides access to diverse habitats including chaparral, sand dunes, riparian zones, rocky intertidal areas, and Morro Bay estuary. Students study geology, biodiversity, and ecosystem dynamics while hiking and conducting fieldwork in these environments.

Across both campuses, KEEP emphasizes experiential learning, environmental stewardship, and scientific inquiry, giving students a unique educational and social experience far beyond the traditional classroom.
